This is me and I work on the web.
It all started when I first did up my personal site. It was done with tables and SWiSH (I think; a Flash mimic) which made some basic flash text movies. I guess I’ve grown a bit now and know exactly when use tables on the web. I currently work for the Australian Museum as a web guy with jobs ranging from server admin (web + mail), database administrator, technical architect and coder. I suppose I work in pretty much all areas of web development bar design (I think I know enough to get myself into trouble).
My main part of the job is to do with web/GIS mapping and biodiversity data analysis for the Collections Informatics and Analysis (CIA ;p) unit. While I don't claim to code apps that do the data analysis, however, what I do is help existing (traditional desktop/command-line) analysis applications to be used in a web environment and provide base-data for the users to do analyse their own data. I do help out when I can with data analysis apps however. Applications that I work on can be for a niche market, targeted towards research scientists, post-graduates working in biodiversity research, conservation planning. Mapping I work on also gets used by school kids to do research on distribution of flora and fauna across Australia and possibly the world.
One aim of mine is to bring web standards into the mapping world. Traditionally, web standards have been sacrificed (or ignored) to get the functionality. My theory is, you can follow standards and still have the needed functionality.
While loving my work at the Australian Museum, which takes me places, do have other roles outside the AM. I contract out to small to medium web development jobs mainly to keep me grounded and not go insane from just working on stuff at the AM.
I love to have fun and help others. This is why I’m involved with a few events like BarCampSydney, GeekWhisperer, STUB, Geeks on the Grass amongst others. This is a great way to meet exciting new people with similar ideas and ideals and step outside the box I started off in.
I’m Ajay Ranipeta and I work on the web.
